What is a dental implant?

Dental implant is a cylinder mostly made of biocompatible metal alloy, as e.g. titanium. It is surgicaly implanted into the jawbone of the patient, as a replacement for a lost tooth root. If the tooth root is not fully lost, the natural root is elongated with a screw, and then the crown is affixed to it.

What material are implants made of?

Implants are mostly made of titanium, which is a biocompatible material and does not cause any allergic reactions. Due to its natural characteristics, human body does not reject it but enables normal fusion of the implant with the jawbone. Process of the implant and the bone fusion (osseointegration) lasts from 3 to 6 months, depending on the patient and the position in the oral cavity it is placed on.

What is osseointegration and how long does it last?

Osseointegration is the fusion of the implant and the bone making them an integral whole, remaining stable even under pressure of the chewing forces in the oral cavity. Titanium is a biocompatible material, accepted by our body and enabling natural fusion with the surrounding tissue. The surgeon will evaluate the time needed for osseointegration right after the procedure. Lower jawbone usually takes 2 to 3 months, whereas the upper jawbone normally takes 3 to 4 months to osseointegrate. The process of osseointegartion can last even longer. Depending on the complexity and the type of procedure, it can last even from 6 to 10 months.

What is a suprastructure?

Specialist in oral surgery

After the implant is placed, the dentist will also place a provisional suprastructure and dental crown. The suprastructure is a special titanium screw, connecting the implant with the crown or dentures. It is placed when the patient comes for the prosthetic part of the procedure.

Who can place implants?

Dental implants should be placed only by oral surgery specialists - implantologists. It is very important that such surgical intervention is done by an oral surgeon specialized for placement of implants, because this minimizes the possibility of complications in the postoperative period. When an experienced oral surgeon is placing the implant, the percentage of success of the fusion of the implant and the bone is going up to 99%.
